✦ Synopsis
The 056 polysaccharide moiety of the 056 antigen (LPS) consists of D-glucose, o-galactose, 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-o-glucose, and N-acetylneuraminic acid in the molar ratios 1: 1: 1: 1. Methylation analysis, periodate oxidation, mild acid hydrolysis, as well as 'H and 13C NMR spectroscopy showed that the 056 polysaccharide has the primary structure + 3)-/3-D-GlcpNAc_(l + 3)_p-~-Gkp-(l + 7)a-NeuHc-(2 --) 2

The K16-antigen from E. coli Rk 21510 (O7:K16:H-) is shown to consist of the repeating unit ----2)-beta-D-Ribf-(1----3)-beta-D-Ribf-(1----5)-alpha-Kd op-(2---- of which approximately 33% is O-acetylated at position 3 of the 2-linked ribose.
The structure of the K54-antigenic polysaccharide (K54 antigen) of Escherichia coli O6:K54:H10 was elucidated by determination of the composition, 1H- and 13C-n.m.r. spectroscopy, periodate oxidation, and a study of the oligosaccharides obtained by partial hydrolysis with acid. The O-specific polysaccharide of S. atiz~~~ae 021 was found to contain 2-acetamido-2deoxy-o-glucose, 2-acetamidino-2,6-dideoxy-L-galactose, N-acetylneuraminic acid, and Oacetyl groups. The structure of the capsular antigen of E. coli K49 and the oligosaccharides derived from it by partial acid hydrolysis were studied by 1D- and 2D-n.m.r. spectroscopy, g.l.c.-c.i.-mass spectrometry, and methylation analysis. The K49 polysaccharide consists of the repeating unit----4)-beta-D-GlcpA-(
