It was of interest to study the pneumococcal polysaccharides containing D-galactofuranosyl residues, because, in most cases, such residues have been found to be immunodeterminant'. By trial experiments, it was found that the polysaccharide from Streptococcus pneumoniae type 20 (S-20) contains D-gala

✦ Synopsis
Aqueous extraction of the red alga Iridaea membranacea gave a high-sulfated polysaccharide. The structure of the polysaccharide has been investigated by hydrolysis, methanolysis, and fractionation. It resembles carrageenan in composition, but fractionation with KCI, and methylation analysis of two homogeneous fractions, showed that it is a complex mixture of sulfated D-galactans.

The structure of the capsular polysaccharide elaborated by KlebsieUa type 7 has been investigated. NMR spectroscopy together with sugar and methylation analysis have been the main methods used. A uronic acid degradation was also employed. The polysaccharide consists of hexasaccharide repeating units
The major fraction of rhamnogalactan was isolated from the cell wall of Bifidobacterium longum YIT4028 by treatment with N-acetylmuramidase. This polysaccharide was composed of rhanmose and galactose in a molar ratio of about 2 : 3. The 13C NMR spectrum indicated that it contained a pentasaccharides
The neutral polysaccharide isolated from the fruits of Cord& dichotoma was separated into two fractions, I and II, by gel filtration using Sephadex G-100. The major fraction, II, was found to contain D-glucose and L-arabinose in the molar ratio of 21:4. The results of complete hydrolysis with acid,
The polysaccharides isolated from the defatted seeds of Salmalia malabarica (Bombacaceae) were fractionated into Fractions I (48%), II (30%), III (14%), and IV (8%) using a column of Sephadex G-100 in pyridine-acetate buffer. The principal polysaccharide fraction, Fraction I (carbohydrate content' 9
