✦ Synopsis
The O-antigen from Vibrio choleme 0:21 has been investigated, using n.m.r. spectroscopy, methylation analysis, and Smith degradation as the main methods. It is concluded that the O-antigen is composed of tetrasaccharide repeating-units having the following structure (in which Hep = D-glycero-D-manno-heptose). cr-I,-Rhap : 3 +3)-/l-D-GlcpNAc-(1+7)+Hepp-(l+ 4 1 /3-D-GalpNAc INTRODUCMON The species Vibrio cholerue is divided into several serogroups on the basis of their O-antigens. The disease Asiatic cholera is caused only by strains belonging to serogroup 0: 1. In addition, there are at least 72 additional serogroups of V. cholerue, collectively known as non-O:1 V. chobrue. In the past, the non-O:1 V. choleme have been inappropriately designated' as nonagglutinating (NAG) or noncholera vibrios (NCV). Non-O: 1 V. ckolerue have caused sporadic cases of gastrointestinal illness and have occasionally been isolated from persons with extraintestinal d&a&. A *Dedicated to Professor N. K. Kochetkov.

The structure of the Vibrio cholerae O:3 O-antigen polysaccharide has been investigated, mainly by n.m.r. spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, sugar and methylation analysis, and specific degradations, and is proposed to involve the following tetrasaccharide repeating-unit. [formula: see text]. In this
The lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Vibrio cholerae O139 was deacylated with KOH. The following structure of the oligosaccharide resulting from this treatment was established on the basis of monosaccharide and methylation analyses, 1H, 13C and 31P 1D and 2D NMR experiments and 1D analogues of 3D NOESY
Detailed information was obtained regarding the partial structure of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS), containing glucose, glucuronic acid, 2-amino-2-deoxy-glucose, L-glycero-D-gluco-heptose, and small proportions of L-glycero-D-manno-heptose, mannose, and galactose, isolated from Vibrio cholera Ogawa G
The structure of the Vibrio fluvialis M-940 O-antigen polysaccharide has been investigated by sugar and methylation analyses, specific degradations, NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. It is proposed that it consists of a heptasaccharide unit having the following structure. alpha-L-Rhap-(1-->2)
