## Abstract The paper analyses the most recent research carried out in Italy concerning the seismic behaviour of historic buildings. The last Umbria (Italy) earthquake in 1997 was an interesting on site test for the evaluation of the repair and prevention techniques applied to masonry building of h

Abstract
Techniques, materials and design procedures in use for the structural restoration of historical buildings and monuments in seismic areas are presented on a conceptual basis and in relation to the restoration principles as they are stated in the Venice Charter. In this respect, the dependence of the restoration on the preservation of the aesthetic and historical values of the buildings, the low reliability of their original textures and the limitations to the intervention materials and techniques, create a very strict frame of actions, which is a real challenge for the structural engineer.

A discrete-time wave propagation formulation of the seismic response of tall buildings is introduced. The building is modeled as a layered medium, similar to a layered soil medium, and is subjected to vertically propagating seismic shear waves. Soil layers and the bedrock under the foundation are in
## Abstract Since 1994 a total of 24 buildings and structures have been designed in Armenia that incorporate seismic isolation bearings. The number of baseβ and roofβisolated buildings already constructed in Armenia has reached 14. Currently, several baseβisolated buildings are under construction.
## Abstract This review outlines the present state of applications of seismic isolation to civil buildings in Europe (with particular reference to Italy), including the countries formerly belonging to the USSR. Some information is also given on the use of other passive innovative antiseismic device
## Abstract Japan is the country where seismic isolation is most widely used for civil buildings. Since the HanshinβAwaji earthquake of 17 January 1995 when the effectiveness of seismic isolation was demonstrated, baseβisolated buildings have become more popular in Japan. This article reviews seism
