โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

Since 1994 a total of 24 buildings and structures have been designed in Armenia that incorporate seismic isolation bearings. The number of baseโ€ and roofโ€isolated buildings already constructed in Armenia has reached 14. Currently, several baseโ€isolated buildings are under construction. Seismic isolation systems and justification of their effectiveness and application in Armenia are given in this paper. Statistics and examples characterizing various types of applications of seismic isolation techniques are described. The development of a design code and design guidelines for seismic isolation of buildings and structures is discussed. A new concept of a dynamic damper to restrict the displacements of seismic isolated buildings is presented, and future applications of seismic isolation techniques are mentioned.

## Abstract In this paper, a new base isolation system, namely the sliding concave foundation (SCF), is introduced and the behaviour of the buildings using such a system is theoretically investigated. A building supported on the new system behaves like a compound pendulum during seismic excitation.
