Abstract
This paper presents experimental data about the absorption band of the stretching vibration of OH^−^ in RbCl, KBr, and KCl, and about the field‐ and stress‐induced dichroism of this band at low temperatures. For small concentrations (N~OH~ < 10^−4^) the spectrum was found to consist of a single band with a halfwidth ≦ 0.1 cm^−1^ (LHeT). The experiments about the dichroism clearly indicate that for RbCl and KBr the molecule axis of the OH^−^ is pointing along 〈100〉. For OH^−^ in KCl the results are more complicated and cannot be explained completely. However, the general model of a 〈100〉 dipole seems to hold also for this system.
