✦ Synopsis

A review of the basic analytical approaches used for the strength calculation of cutting tools is presented in this article. A new, less labour-consuming and more accessible approach is offered according to which the complicated theoretical models for the determination of the magnitude, region, direction and distribution of the cutting forces are replaced with simple experimental research and geometric constructions. The stresses are determined at triaxial stress states using the finite-element method and existing computer programs. The results of the new approach application given in the study are similar to those obtained with complicated theoretical models.
