โœฆ Synopsis

The term ''grain moisture content'' refers in the grain market , and in grain-drying technology , to the average moisture content of a sample of kernels .

Recent studies have established that a significant variance in moisture content exists among individual grain kernels . 1 Thus , the variation in the moisture content between the kernels should be considered in the evaluation of the processes of grain drying and grain storage , in addition to the average moisture content .

Present grain drying models assume a uniform initial moisture content of the grain kernels ; they are routinely used in the simulation , design and control of grain dryers . 2 The object of the present study is to develop stochastic models for the a erage moisture content and ariance in grain dryers operating under non-uniform initial moisture contents of the kernels . Part 1 presents the experimental results , Part 2 the development of several stochastic models , and Part 3 the analysis of crossflow drying employing a stochastic model . 267

In Part 1 of this series of three papers , it was shown that the moisture content in maize reaching a dryer is approximately normally distributed . In Part 2 , stochastic drying models are developed for grain with an initial normal distribution in moisture content . It is shown that the moisture con
