Fluorine-graphite intercalation compounds have been prepared from HOPG and natural graphite powder in the presence of a fluoride such as AgF, WF,, or SbF, at room temperature. The C,F samples obtained were quasi stage 1, 2, and 3 compounds with compositions of Cz ,F-CU hF. The stage 1 hases in the a

โฆ Synopsis
Samples of stage-2 fluorine graphite intercalation compounds (GIC) were studied by scanning tunneling microscope (STM) from submicrometer to atomic scale. From the STM view point, the most striking observation concerns the topographic modifications of the ((a, b)) sample surface induced by the intercalation process. Our STM images of a (\mathrm{C}_{6} \mathrm{~F}) compound are the first direct visualization of the fluorine atoms organization in the van der Waals gap. O 1993 Academic Press, Inc.

The kinetics of intercalation of bromine in graphite were modeled by considering the change in free energy from stage to stage and the diffusion of bromine. The model predicts that Cn,4BrZ is unstable at temperatures above N 250ยฐC. Satisfactory agreement was found between the model and the experimen
A graphite intercalation compound of C,F(MgF& was prepared under a fluorine atmosphere of 1 atm at temperatures of 20-350ยฐC. The 1st stage compound has the identity period of 9.3-9.4& ESCA and @F NMR spectra indicate that the chemical interaction of intercalated fluorine with carbon is similar to th
