The effects of x-rays on the avian embryo have received the attention of many investigators. U7hile a great deal of qualitative work was done early in this century, little quantitative work was accomplished (see a review of the literature by Butler, '36). Recent studies have for the most part been confined to the later stages of the development of the embryo and to the study of pathological conditions created by exposure of eggs to heavy doses of x-rays (Gladstone and Colwell, '33; Spears, '35 ; Wilson, '35 ; Essenberg and Zikmund, '38 ; Komoti, '39). So f a r as the writers are aware, no studies were made on the stimulating action of x-rays, and the effect such action would have on the early development of the embryo or on the hatchability.

It seemed interesting and important to undertake a more or less systematic study of the effect on the embryo when fresh eggs are subjected to a wide range of x-ray doses.

The rate of heart beat has long been used as an indicator of the functioning of the organ itself, and, indirectly of other normal and pathological conditions within the embryo. It has been shown that during the development of fish, birds and reptiles ( Needham, '31) the rate of heart beat changes re

Embryos cultured in the absence of EDTA exhibit abnormal increases in glycolytic activity that result in reduced development. Culture with EDTA was able to prevent this increase in glycolysis and,

## Abstract Recently, highly specific markers of the lymphatic endothelium have been found enabling us to reinvestigate the embryonic origin of the lymphatics. Here we present a review of our studies on the development of the lymphatic system in chick and quail embryos. We show that the lymphatic e
