Abstract
The main sterol of Vernonia anthelmintica seed is 7,(Z)β24(28)βstigmastadienol (Ia). Stigmasterol and a C^29^βsterol with a conjugated diene system, probably at C^8^ and C^14^, are also present, whilst GLC data indicate two other components to be 5βstigmastenβ3Ξ²βol and 7,22βstigmastadienol. A correlation of NMR data is given showing the stereochemistry at the ethylidene group of Ia and in related compounds.

Two novel elemanolide dimers, vernodalidimers A (1) and B (2), possessing a rare tricyclic ortho ester moiety, were isolated from the seeds of Vernonia anthelmintica. Their structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR data and CD spectra. Vernodalidimers A (1) and B (2) exhibited potent cell growth i
