Abstract

Stereoselective syntheses of (±)‐epi‐β‐santalene (1) and (±)‐epi‐β‐santalol (2), minor constituents of East Indian sandalwood oil, are described. The starting material for both syntheses is the tricyclic hemiacetal 4, readily accessible in two steps from norbornene.

## Abstract Die Cyclopropan‐Ringöffnung von (+)‐α‐Santalylacetat (**1b**) durch Einwirkung von 1. HCl/CHCl~3~ bei −50°C und 2. basischem Al~2~O~3~ führte zu (‐)‐β‐Santalylacetat (**2b**) und (+)‐epi‐β‐Santalylacetat (**3b**), die nach ^1^H‐ und ^13^C‐NMR‐ sowie ORD‐Spektren identisch mit den aus os
