โฆ Synopsis
This article presents an analysis of three diRerent optical cncuits each of which exhibit bistable hehaviour. The devices are an optical cavity ring oscillator, a simple optical fibre resonator and a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) with feedback. Comparison is made between the resonators by means of a hnear stability analysis and bifurcation diagrams. We show that instabilities can affect the bistable nature ol'the devices. We also find that the dynamics of the cavity rmp and the simple fibre resonator are equivalent up to a scaling, and that the dynarmcs of the nonlinear optical loop mirror are different due to counterpropagating fields and the transmission characteristics of the NOLM. For each of the devices discussed. parameter values which give relatively large isolated histable regions are listed.
