Thus, in place of the one ligand-field transition (Eg + Tzg) customary for octahedral symmetry, three transitions can occur ( E l , ' > A l , , E l g + B z ~, and B1, + Eg for an octahedron extended in the z-direction), and these can be recognized in the reflectance spectra of most of the compounds as three absorption maxima. The assignment is ensured in particular through the Mn(ii1) fluorides, where because of the larger Dq values two bands are shifted to higher energies whilst the position of the third is barely affected. Wnen the metal-ligand distances are known [e.g., for Cu(I1) fluorides] the term positions can be calculated by means of the 10950 1 I100 1 1 850
