✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Yb^3+^‐doped Ca~4~Gd~0.5~Y~0.5~O(BO~3~)~3~ single crystals with good optical quality have been grown by the Czochralski method. The grown crystal was characterized using X‐ray powder diffraction. The polarized absorption and emission spectra and fluorescence lifetime of anisotropic monoclinic crystal Yb^3+^: Ca~4~Gd~0.5~Y~0.5~O(BO~3~)~3~ (Yb: GdYCOB) have been measured. Based on the absorption and emission spectra, the Stark energy‐level distribution was located. The spectrum and laser parameters of Yb^3+^: Ca~4~Gd~0.5~Y~0.5~O(BO~3~)~3~ (Yb: GdYCOB) crystal have been calculated.
