✦ Synopsis

Up to the present, attempts to isolate compounds having a cyclic oxetane-2,4-dione /malonic anhydride l_/.structure or to prove unambiguously their structure have been unsuccessful.

Ylronova and Dvorko' reported the conversion of succinic, glutario, phthalic and maleio acids with dioyclohexyl oarbodiimide /DCC/ Into cyollo anhydrides and dlcyolohexyl urea /DCU/. According to our experience 3 the derivatives of malonlc acid also react at first in this way but the malonic anhydride formed reacts instantaneously with another DCC molecule or polymerizes. Though Duckworth described the preparation of compounds having a cyclic malonic an&dride structure, the IR bands specified by him /at 1824 and 1780 cm"/ are inconsistent with the four-membered ring structure, they may be assigned rather to its dimer of structure 2.

An impression prevails in these days that the ether postulated by Newton, Faraday, Kelvin, Maxwell and Lorentz is a figment of the imagination--that the theory of relativity through its prophets Einstein, Eddington, Jeans and others has shown it to be non-existent and its assumption an anachronism.
