## Abstract Irradiation of squaric acid (4) in an argon matrix at 10 K leads to ethynediol (dihydroxyacetylene) (1) via bis (hydroxyketenyl) 5 and deltic acid (6). The identification of 1 is based on the comparison between the experimental and calculated IR spectrum.
