โœฆ Synopsis

Alkaline hydrogen peroxide rapidly and quantitatively reduces trinitromethyl compounds except esters of trinitroethanol, to the corresponding I, l-dinitro anion. Esters of trinitroethanol and 2,2-dinitroalcohols are saponified and demethylolated quantitatively to trinitromethyl and 1,I-dinitro anions, respectively.

The intense near ultraviolet absorption of these ions affords a ready method of analysis for a variety of structures.

The mechanisms of the reactions are discussed.

A method to estimate collagen concentration is described. It is based on the ability of the dye Sirius Red F3BA to quantitatively precipitate collagen in acetic acid solution. Collagen content is determined by evaluating spectrophotometrically the absorbance decrease of a Sirius Red/acetic acid solu
