β¦ Synopsis
The third international Conference on Geometric Modeling and Processing was held in Beijing, China, from April 13 to 15, 2004. It brought together leading researchers in the field of Geometric Computing. This special section contains improved and extended versions of selected presentations at GMP 2004.
The first paper, by Seong et al., addresses a classical problem of Computer Aided Design, namely surface/surface intersection. It extends ideas which the authors had developed for the intersection of a rationally parameterized freeform surface with a ruled surface or a ringed surface. The latter two surface classes are formed by sweeping a straight line or a circle, respectively. In the present paper, the swept curve is much more general, namely a rational parametric curve or an algebraic curve, defined as intersection of two algebraic surfaces.
The contribution by Dimri and Gurumoorthy presents an algorithm for the reconstruction of a 3D technical object, which is given by an engineering drawing via orthographic projections and sectional views. The incorporation of sectional views is a new and challenging aspect, which is handled in a volume-based approach. Technical drawings are a kind of universal language in engineering; although based on geometric operations, they exhibit errors and personal preferences in the selection and arrangement of views. Thus, the level of difficulty in the present reconstruction problem is in some sense comparable to language understanding.
