โœฆ Synopsis

T h e superficial triangles and the fascially defined spaces of the head and neck are two methods of localizing pathologic lesions in this region. The triangles of the neck provide superficial anatomic relations for disease processes. The spaces of the head and neck, popularized by the advent of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning, provide anatomic relations at all depths and define compartments through which disease processes can extend, as well as define the differential diagnosis of mass lesions arising within an individual compartment. A thorough understanding of the spaces and triangles of the head and neck allows the head and neck surgeon to correlate the radiologic findings with the surgical approach to a mass lesion in the head and neck. This unique approach to the anatomy of the head and neck is described herein.

Pilomatrixoma is an uncommon neoplasm which occurs most frequently in the head and neck region. It usually presents as a slowly growing dermal or subcutaneous mass. Unfamiliarity with this lesion may lead the physician to mistake it for more common infectious or neoplastic processes. Most pilomatrix

Neurofibromatosis (von Recklinghausen's disease) is an autosomal dominant disease that affects one in 2,500-3,000 births. Because the head and neck is unique in its anatomical compartmentalization of the central and peripheral nervous systems, the potential for involvement of these areas with neurof
