same for all film thicknesses (ranging from 270 A for the thinnest to 405OA for the thickest).
At 450ยฐC the decrease in film thickness was found to be linear for times up to 30 hours. Such a dependence was assumed to apply to other temperatures as well. The data for a range of temperatures are shown in Fig. 1. The number beside each point is the time in hours the specimens (pairs of bars) were held at temperature. The curve is in good agreement with the Arrhenius relation over the entire temperature range, despite different times used for the measurement. This tends to confirm a linear law of film dissolution. The activation energy is 43.5 kcal/mol. negligible in comparison to film growth in oxygen in the temperature range 200" to 425'C. Gulbransen found an energy of activation of 18.2 kcallmol which represents oxygen d~usion through the oxide. This is significantly less than 43.5 kcallmol and one may conclude that oxide dissolution is limited by another process perhaps the electron transfer at t'he interface.
