✦ Synopsis

A model for detection of targets by three bearing-angle-only sensors is presented. Sensors are assumed to report angles with additive Gaussian measurement error, and some probabilistic consequences of this assumption are examined.

The feasibility and the limits of pyroelectric infrared (IR) detection are evaluated using a radiometric chain model and the optimal structure of the sensor is determined by a one-dimensional thermal model. Sample detectors are then fabricated and characterized. The best structures obtained show a s
