✦ Synopsis
The feasibility and the limits of pyroelectric infrared (IR) detection are evaluated using a radiometric chain model and the optimal structure of the sensor is determined by a one-dimensional thermal model. Sample detectors are then fabricated and characterized. The best structures obtained show a sensitivity of (5.41 \mathrm{~V} \mathrm{~W}^{-1}) and a detectivity of (1.3310^{9} \mathrm{~cm}_{\mathrm{Hz}} \mathrm{F}^{1 / 2} \mathrm{~W}^{-1}). Finally the good operation of a rotating IR passive pyroelectric detector is experimentally demonstrated.
