✦ Synopsis

The kinetic behaviour of the solid state thermal decomposition of dithionate to sulphate, M2[Sz0,] + M,[SO,], M = Na, K, has been studied by following the temporal decrease in the intensity of the Raman band arising from the v,(SO,) mode of [S2O6]". The sodium salt displays first order kinetics, but the kinetic behaviour of the potassium salt could not be accounted for using either the conventional kinetic treatment or the Avrami-Erofeev treatment. The Raman derived data for the sodium salt agree well with previously reported pressure derived data supporting the contention that Raman spectroscopy is a valid technique to use in obtaining solid phase kinetic data.
