Software Reviews

Recent technological advances in computer hardware have brought about dramatic changes in management practice. In particular, the rapid development of a multiplicity of microcomputers (and their incompatibilities) has led to an explosion in the number of packages available. In response to this, the Journal of Forecasting now includes a separate section concerned specifically with forecasting software. To an extent this parallels the established book review section. In this issue, an extensive survey of mainframe (multipurpose) software is presented. The information summarized for each package is deliberately descriptive, with general criteria being chosen to document salient features of interest rather than provide a comparative critique.

Although this may be viewed as a valuable service to anyone wishing to update his, or her, software, we felt that this descriptive overview was only the first step. It will be revised and republished at appropriate intervals, but also we shall be arranging for a number of packages to be more extensively reviewed in subsequent issues.
