✦ Synopsis

Visualization and numerical analysis of 3D-images are frequently used methods for the understanding of complex biological processes. The geometrical representation of the 3D-data used in the input phase is not necessarily the most apt for all kinds of processing one wants to apply on the data. To facilitate the manipulation of 3D-data we have developed a geometrical database containing three different geometrical representations of each object. These three geamemcal representations are: the voxel enumeration model, the contour model and the surface patch model. The contourmodel and the voxel enumeration-model are the geometrical representations typically used for input. The triangles are used for surface patch. Since the database contains all three representations of one object, conversion methods are integrated in the database.

To this end, if a 3D-dataset in one representation is available in the database, the other two geometrical representations are derived from that dataset. Conversion methods are robust and can deal wilh complex topologies. The storage of the geometrical data is optimized for fast retrieval and low disk-capacity. Examples of the X11implementation of the database will be shown.

The ability to manipulate materials on smaller and smaller scales has led to an increasing demand for surface metrology solutions that facilitate innovation and help to assure quality. While 2D (x, z) surface characterisation is still very common in industry today, in many cases 3D (x, y, z) charact
