โฆ Synopsis
Three recent methods for screening singular extremals arising as candidates for an optimal trajectory are applied to the problem of control of a stirred reactor. It is found that all three methods yield the same necessary condition for optimality. This new condition may exclude singular subarcs from the optimal solution under certain circumstances.

The method of the describing function is outlined and applied both to the linear problem and to the stirred tank. The hysteresis element is separable and the assumption is made that the signals to it are of sinusoidal form when the reactor is operating with a limit cycle. In spite of the shakiness o
