Abstract
The fluorescence quenching under high excitation intensities has been studied in anthracene crystals. The singletโsinglet annihilation constant of (1 ยฑ 0.5) ร 10^โ8^ cm^3^ s^โ1^ is calculated from the quenching of fluorescence induced by a nitrogen 16 ns pulse laser (ฮป = 3371 ร ). The main process of quenching under longer illumination (2 ร 10^โ5^s) is the interection between singlet and triplet excitons with a rate constant of (7 ยฑ 4) ร 10^โ9^ cm^3^s^โ1^.

The singlet exciton-charge carrier annihilation rate constant KS has been measured CLS Xi x 10-5cm3 set-1 for hoies and electrons. The mngnitude of Ks is discussed with respect to the magnitude of rhc electron-hole recombination rate constant.
Singlet excitons in anthracene crystal are annihilated by trapped hoIes near an Au hole-injecting electrode. The efficiency of detrappiny is about 1%. The singlet exciton fluorescence can be modulated by means of a varying external eIectric field.
