✦ Synopsis

Abstract

A simple single fiber Bragg grating (FBG)‐based force sensing head is proposed, in which half of the FBG is thinned through chemical corrosion with hydrofluoric acid so that different force sensitivities are achieved from the two grating halves, while their temperature sensitivities remain the same. The initial single Bragg reflection peak of the FBG splits into two, whose wavelengths are sensitive to both force and temperature, but the separation of their wavelengths is determined only by the applied force. As a result, simultaneous measurement of force and temperature are realized by measuring wavelengths of the two peaks. In the experiment, sensitivities of 0.784 nm/N and 9.7 pm/Β°C are achieved for force and temperature, respectively. And the corresponding resolutions are 0.013 N and 1.03Β°C, limited by the wavelength measurement resolution, 0.01 nm, of the employed optical spectrum analyzer. PACS: 42.81.Pa, 42.81.‐i. An experimental investigation has been carried out to establish an identification procedure for the detection, localization, and sizing of a flaw in a beam based on forced response measurements. The experimental setup consisted of a circular beam, which was supported by rolling bearings at both ends
