✦ Synopsis
The information becomes more complex, however, when the two (almost identically prepared!) columns are compared. Column 2 is reasonably, though not perfectly, inert in the sense of adsorption. Independently, it shows considerable catalytic activity! The opposite is true for column 1 which shows more adsorptive combined with less catalytical activity. This means that the catalytical activity of a column cannot be evaluated by an adsorption test, and vice versa. In addition, we know that an activity test with silyl esters cannot be used to predict the catalytic activity of the same column for other types of solutes. This account may serve to illustrate my statement [l] that dealing with adsorptive and catalytic processes is "exciting and confusing".
