A synthesis of enantiopure methyl d-erythro-2,3-dihydroxybutanoate has been realized using two simple and consecutive reactions on d-erythronolactone as the starting material. The two reactions are lactone ring opening with hydrobromic acid in methanol and subsequent reductive debromination.
