The magnetocaloric effect of EuS was measured in the vicinity of its ferromagnetic ordering temperature, that is, .between 5 and 25 K. The results confirm the potential advantage of using EuS as a magnetic refrigerant, as indicated by previous theoretical studies.
I'reswrc of ==7 kbar apphcd to single crystals of pdramagnctic I-cClz -4Hz0 at 4.2 K and 40 kOe reduces the cffcctwc magnetic field Hcff at the Fe nucleus from 229.5 f 1 to 223.5 f 1 kOe. A decrcasc of the hgand field splitting with prcssure is indlcatcd.
