✦ Synopsis

A theory is outlined which predicts that under certain conditions, other than the ones that give rise to self-induced transparency, the absorption coefficient of a medium for a very short pulse of tig'nt is proportional to the duration of the puke. Various relevant esperimcnts are discussed and their results are shown to be consistent with the predictions.
