β¦ Synopsis
Abstmct-A phenomenological model of fatigue threshold in which the effects of stress level and crack length are taken into account for the crack opening conditions is proposed. A critical size of the initiation crack of the mode I fracture is determined. Based on the model the dependence between lengths of fictitious and intrinsic cracks is discussed. Conditions of nonpropagating crack appearance near the notch root are shown. A maximum nonpropagating crack length and corresponding critical nominal stress are found. An approach to the prediction of fatigue notch factor under crack initiation or complete fracture is considered. The predicted results are compared with experimental data of a low-carbon steel.

A previous experimental investigation showed that the short crack behavior in severe V-notched geometries is essentially characterized by an initial transient variation of the crack opening level within the notch plastic zone. This result is exploited to derive a general formulation of the endurance

Theoretical estimation of fatigue limit of notches under axial push-pull loading was made with an emphasis on the formation of non-propagating crack. A critical notch radius and a critical stress concentration factor were determined so as to distinguish notch fatigue limits with crack initiation and
Experiments with preloaded notched members of 2024-T3 aluminum alloy have shown that preloads in a wide range, even including those which create overall yielding, increase the fatigue lives of the members. Evidence suggests that the extended fatigue life is primarily due to the residual compressive
