โฆ Synopsis
Side group liquidโcrystalline polymers (SGโLCP) will need to be macroscopically oriented if the applications foreseen for them are to be realized. The first observation of oscillatoryโsheerโinduced alignment of an SGโLCP melt (the Figure shows a schematic of the rheoโoptical apparatus used) is reported. This discovery widens the potential applications of SGโLCPs, but also raises fundamental questions regarding the mechanism of flowโinduced alignment. magnified image

The objective of this study was to determine the influence of very low levels (less than 2%) of liquid crystal polymer (LCP) molecules on the properties of polyolefin matrices. The higher level of crystallinity obtained from nuclear magnetic resonance and Raman measurements suggests the possibility
The phase and orientational behaviors of a series of liquid crystalline (LC) AB-type diblock copolymers comprising thermotropic main-chain (MC) polyester and side-group (SG) polymethacrylate blocks were investigated by X-ray diffraction. The MC and SG blocks were phase separated and gave rise to the
For the first time the flexible cyclopentyl ring is used to build mesogenic units, and thus a novel mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer (MJLCP) poly(dicyclopentyl vinylterephthalate) is synthesized. The polymer forms a stable mesophase which changes to an isotropic phase at 267 8C. The forma
