The similarity of one molecule to another has usually been defined in terms of electron densities or electrostatic potentials or fields. Here it is expressed as a function of the molecular shape. Formulations of similarity (S) reduce to very simple forms, thus rendering the computerised calculation
When datamining large databases with images or drawings of objects, there is a need to search for objects with a shape similarity. According to recent overview papers the issue of comparing different shape similarity retrieval methods and systems has largely been neglected in the research community
Eleven criteria are suggested as suitable for measures of similarity between distributions, For seven measures it is discussed whether they satisfy these measures or not. Two measures, the proportional similarity and the Hellinger coefficient satisfy all the eleven criteria.
