Serum levels of tocopherols were measured in 5 healthy volunteers and in 14 patients with acute respiratory failure before and after onset of high-dose enteral vitamin E administration. The initial alpha-tocopherol levels did not differ between both groups (12.1 +/- 2.7 micrograms/ml in the voluntee
