✦ Synopsis
Leghemoglobin (Lb) is an oxygen-binding monomeric hemoprotein found in symbiotic root nodules of nitrogen-fixing leguminous plants. In alfalfa, as in other legumes, Lb is encoded by a small gene family. As a first step toward understanding the structure, organization and regulation of the alfalfa Lb gene family, the DNA sequence of 7 new cDNA and 2 genomic clones has been determined by the method of Sanger et al.

A cDNA encoding a putative cytoplasmic ribosomal protein L5 from alfalfa (MsRL5), the first sequence from higher plants, has been characterized. The derived amino acid sequence of 181 residues contains the L5 signature, is 72.2~o identical to yeast ribosomal L5 and shares high identity with other RL
