โฆ Synopsis
A novel method for the determination of diffusion coefficients in fused salts is described. It would permit investigations of the diffusion of ions in molten salts under an applied potential gradient.
(2) The diffusion coefficient of Cd in molten CdCl,-KC1 increases with increasing molar fraction of KC1 until this reaches 50 mol per cent and thereafter decreases.
(3) Molten CdCI, contains associated CdCl, which breaks down increasingly upon addition of KCl. The ions formed are complexed to CdCl,.
This ion is the predominant Cd-containing entity at compositions above 50 mol per cent KCI. Application of the model to an interpretation of the conductance isotherms in the system suggests a reason for the "hump" in these curves.
