Rhodium-catalyzed cyclic carbonylation of 2-ethynylbenzylalcohols 1. under water-gas shift reaction conditions gives selectively 3.isochromanones 2 which are derived from 1 and one molecule each of hydrogen and carbon monoxide with incorporation of the hydroxymethyl group adjacent to the ethynyl group.
