diene and 1,7'-octadiene to the corresponding monoenes has been carried out under mild conditions. using different (allyl)Pd(II) den'vatives in NJdimethylacetamide solution. Experiments on the I,3-COD system suggest a mechanism involving the formation of hydrido-Pd(II) species followed by insertion of diene to restore the allylic moiety. Non conjugated dienes are isomerized prior to hydrogenation. The complete selectivity appears to result from an intrinsic propetty due to formation of qj-allylic intermediates.
