✦ Synopsis
Some mechanical properties of valve austenitic steel whose surface was modified by glow discharge-assisted nitriding, were investigated. The static strength, impact strength and frictional resistance of the steel were determined, and its cracking behavior was recorded. The results confirm the advantage of this modification in improving the surface properties of the valves of combustion engines. The glow discharge-assisted nitriding improves the frictional resistance. It also increases the ultimate tensile strength of the steel and affects the impact test temperature.
