โœฆ Synopsis

Many high-technology companies have policies that discourage their researchers from publishing scientific articles, which creates conflict between management and the scientists. This article offers some ideas on why a policy of openness with scientific findings might be preferred, and a framework for deciding on an approach. Some of the reasons to support openness include better recruitment of scientists, stimulating internal creativity, and even better protection of proprietary knowledge assets through membership in a social network. This issue of publication policies impacts competitive intelligence professionals in two facets of their job: the collection of secondary data (particularly patenting analysis) and the protection of their firm's own scientific findings.
