The laser excited so-called "fluorescence" background from MgO and q-Al203 surfaces was studied. Surface hydroxide ions are found to be responsible for this phenomenon, since a clear correlation between background intensity and hydrosyl group density of the surface is observed. The so-called "fluor

✦ Synopsis
The scattermg barkgronnd observed in the laser Raman spectra of surfaces of polydisperse metal oxrdes, namely aiuminas, is due to various sources, such as surface contamination by hydrocarbons and transition metal impurities. An important contribution comes from an optical excitation of bulk and surface states. The luminescence from surface states can be quenched by collisional deactivation by the admission of oxygen or nitric oxide.

A new interpretation for the often observed phenomenon of "Raman backgroundÏ is presented and discussed. It is shown that in many cases the appearance of the background for various materials (organic and inorganic) is associated with the presence of high-wavenumber m(XH) vibrations. The nature of th
