Vinyl chloride/acetylene copolymers have been prepared under subsaturation conditions. Copolymerization rates and molecular weights of the copolymers decrease with increasing concentration of acetylene in the monomer feed, indicating that acetylene is a retarder in vinyl chloride polymerization. ✦ Synopsis
The semiempirical method proposed by Vedeneyev was used to stud? the (7 CI, (" H and C--C bonds in poly(vinyl chloride). Activation energies for elimination of hydrogen chloride were calculated on the principle of the additivit3 of bond energies of the four-membered activated complex, for various saturated abnormal structures in the polymer molecule, such as branching and head-to-head or tail-to-tail addition. Some possible saturaled abnormalities controlled b3 polymerization conditions make only small contributions to initiatima of lhermal dehydrochlorination but branched structures having a tertiary chlorine appear to have a significant effect. A monomolecular hydrogen chloride elimination mechanism is schematically illustrated and discussed on the basis of Goddard's orbital phase contmuit_\ principle.
