✦ Synopsis

We present a tensorial formalism adapted to the study of the ( (n 000) ) rovibrational stretching states of spherical tops in the local mode limit. A local symmetrized rovibrational basis is built to take explicitly into account the fact that. in these states, the local symmetry is (C_{3 v}) rather than (T_{d}). Likewise, we introduce local rovibrational operators to build an effective Hamiltonian for these states. We then test our model by fitting the energy levels of ({ }^{28} \mathrm{SiH}_{4}) for (3 \leqslant n \leqslant 5). Cc 1995 Academic Press, Inc.

The (3000) and ( ) stretching overtone bands of silane, SiH.,, have been observed near 6362 and IO268 cm-' by Fourier transfer spectroscopy with a resolution of 0.01 cm-'. In both spectra the pseudo-symmetric-top rotational structure, similar to that observed in the (3000) band of germane, was clear
