โœฆ Synopsis

The photodissociation of Hz0 in the vacuum UV (X < 135 run) generates rotationally aligned populations of OH(A 2S> fragments. Measurements of their rotationally resolved fluorescence polarisation following photolysis at 130.4 nm reinforces the suggestion that the vibrational structure in the B 'Al -% 'A, continuum is associated with long-lived "resonances" in the excited state. The low levels of alignment at 121.6 nm reflect a delay in the radiationless transfer out of the quasi-bound 6 'A1 Rydberg state initially populated.

We report both measured and calculated rotationally resolved threshold photoelectron spectra for single-photon coherent VUV ionization of the L% 'A, ground state ofjet-cooled HsO and Has. Agreement between the calculated and measured spectra is very encouraging. Both the Hz0 and HsS spectra show typ
