Freudenberg-NOK launches total sealing packages
US-based automotive supplier
Freudenberg-NOK is initiating production of what it terms 'total sealing packages' for different driveline applications and customers.
Expected to have a combined value of nearly US$250 million over the lifetime of the contracts, these packages, which cover a diverse range of static and dynamic seals and gaskets, are being phased into production over the next two months and will be used in new engines, transmissions and axles for soon-to-be-launched vehicles from three different manufacturers in North America.
According to the company, the launch comes at a time when car makers and system suppliers are recognizing that products packaged in this way can help them to make dramatic improvements in reliability and durability, at a lower total cost.
The total sealing packages will consist of components from 14 Freudenberg and NOK Group facilities in six countries on three continents, and will be shipped to the customers' assembly locations for handling efficiencies. The engine sealing package will include 23 part numbers, the transmission package, 20, and the axle will cover 13.
Under Freudenberg-NOK's total sealing approach, the supplier assumes responsibility for the entire set of seals and gaskets to be used on an engine, transmission, axle, brake system or steering system. This simplifies development, purchasing, logistics, supply-chain communications and warranty responsibility for the customer. In the past, these seals had typically been sourced to multiple suppliers, many of whom had little or no input in the development process.
