โœฆ Synopsis

The L:ontribution of cxotherml~., condensed-phase reactions to ignition and del]agration of propellants is examine. Measuretncnts of the rates of heat release, thermal dift'usivity, burning rate and ignition arc combined to demonstrate the role of reactions in propcl::mts made up of po',vdercd ammonium perchlorate and catalysts. By means of a theoretical analysis, it is found that tbr the propellants under study a thermal runav,'ay in the condens~ pha~ t:an account ibr the ignition phenomena observed. Also. at Io,x steady-stale deflagration rates ~he comribution of tl~e ~,olid-phase reacuon~ can be demonstrated. Some of the propellants quenched during dcflagration have sho~;n the existence of a subsurl~ce layer, which is located in a zone al which the icmperature has reached the level characteristic of the crystal transit ion of ammonium perchloratc.
