Effect of water content on product dtstribution in electrochemical chlorination of c-hexene in nitromethane solution was studied. Formation of I-chloro, c-hexanone which occurs at the beginning of electrolysis is more effective at lower water content

✦ Synopsis
The anodic chlorination of c-hexene in NM solution having 150 ppm water content involves three charge-transfer reactions. The effect of potential on change in product distribution is more effective at the beginning of electrolysis. A mechanism for the process is suggested.

In this process a complex intermediate forms between the olefin and Br2 evolved and it transforms to dibromo-c-hexane. At higher potential values theelectrochemical oxidation ofthiscomplex results bromoc-hexanol, the formation of which is hindered by oxide layer on the electrode surface.
The changes in the voItammetric curves upon addition of oletine, chloride ions and water were studied in the electrochemicalchlorination ofcyclohexene in nitromethane solution. Relation of the changes observed to the donation of solvent was discussed.
